Lone Locust Tokyo Smash & Run Tour 2001
Foreword
May 2001 and
we were off on another voyage, once again to visit family in Taiwan, but
stopping in Tokyo on the way. Singapore Air had an affordable package deal that
landed us in Tokyo for a few days before continuing on to Taiwan. Although a
very economical deal, the package was not without some limitations. Limitations
that shaped the look and feel of our trip to a great extent:
- The package is "Six days, fours nights" or as we in
non-marketing professions call it: "Five days, Four nights with a day lost to
the International Date Line."
- May 31/June 1 merged into one day because of the
International Dateline, arriving in the late evening on June 1
- June 2, morning - guided tour of Tokyo by bus,
afternoon left to our own devices.
- June 3, full day at our leisure.
- June 4, ditto.
- June 5, up at 6:00AM to catch the flight to Taipei - no
sightseeing this day.
- Essentially limited to 2.5 days, we needed to remain in
Tokyo, near our hotel. We did decide on a day trip to either Fuji-san or
Nikko.
I expected this to be our most difficult of trips,
whereas in Taiwan, Singapore or the UK one or both of us spoke the native
language, this time we're fully out of our linguistic element. Although I've
taken two years of Japanese, my skills in the langauge would be considered
incompetent at best - and they're getting worse every day I study Chinese.
